For PAT, QbD, and Continuous Manufacturing
Making pharmaceuticals is hard work. Patient safety always comes first, but the strict USP and EP rules that protect patients can also make production slow and expensive.
To solve this, many manufacturers are moving away from traditional batch processing toward leaner, more efficient methods — including continuous and semi-continuous production. At the heart of this shift is Process Analytical Technology (PAT): an approach that improves quality, lifts productivity, and gives real-time insight into what's happening on the line.
Batch Testing vs. Building Quality In
In traditional batch manufacturing, quality is confirmed by testing raw materials, intermediates, and finished products in the lab — over and over. This is called Quality by Testing (QbT). It works, but it's slow, full of low-value steps, and doesn't always catch waste or defects before they happen.
Quality by Design (QbD) flips the approach. Instead of checking quality at the end, you build it in from the start:
Raw materials are checked the moment they arrive.
Dryers, granulators, and mixers track moisture and particle size as they run.
Blend uniformity is verified in real time — no more manual thief sampling.
Tablet presses confirm consistent powder flow before compression.
With PAT in place, products meet spec as they're made. The lab still plays a role, but only for periodic checks and fine-tuning.
Where Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Comes In
Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is a powerful, non-destructive tool that strengthens every stage of solid-dose manufacturing. It's the foundation of a strong QbD program — enabling faster, smarter, and more reliable production.
VIVXI25™ NIR Sensor Solutions are built specifically to support these modern strategies, helping pharmaceutical companies reach higher quality, lower costs, and greater efficiency — all while staying fully compliant.
